Dr. Nick Tse serves as an Assistant Professor in Addiction and Mental Health at The HKCT Institute of Higher Education, where he focuses on research and training to support addiction recovery and mental health. He is a registered social worker (SWRB), a certified counselor, and an Associate Fellow (HKPCA) in Hong Kong. As the first MINT-certified Motivational Interviewing (MI) trainer in Hong Kong, Dr. Tse also serves as a rater for the MINT Trainer Certification Scheme.
Since 2024, he has been the Board of Directors (Network Engagement Liaison) of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT), an international organization dedicated to advancing MI practices worldwide. A founding member and former Chairperson of the Chinese Association of Motivational Interviewing (CAMI), Dr. Tse has played a significant role in promoting MI research and practices within Chinese-speaking communities. However, as of October 9, 2024, he is no longer affiliated with CAMI due to differing working styles.
Dr. Tse is deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of MI trainers. By collaborating with new MI trainers as co-trainers and facilitators, he aims to foster mutual learning and provide opportunities for developing training expertise. His mission is to ensure the growth and sustainability of MI within diverse professional and cultural contexts.
Over the past six years, Dr. Tse has delivered more than 800 hours of MI training in Putonghua, Cantonese, and English. He is currently collaborating with teams in mainland China to provide MI training in Putonghua, ranging from introductory to advanced and coaching levels, with plans to support a MINT-endorsed Training of New Trainers (TNT) in the region.
Dr. Tse’s research focuses on Collective Motivational Interviewing (CMI), which he has developed to support individuals facing addiction and mental health challenges by involving significant others in their recovery. His current projects apply CMI to adolescents with Internet Gaming Disorder, and he recently received funding to expand this work.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Tse has partnered with The University of Hong Kong (HKU), The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (POLYU) and Peking University on several MI research projects. He also formed a coding team in 2023 to assess the quality of MI practices in Chinese, supporting MI clinical research. Through research, training, and collaboration, Dr. Tse is committed to making meaningful contributions to addiction and mental health.
